Braced Candy

The do’s and don’t’s of eating Halloween candy with braces.

By Maddie Maguire

With Halloween creeping up on us, people have begun stocking up on candy. And as somebody with braces, knowing that I’ll have to throw out (or worse, give my little brother) most of my candy because I can’t eat it. Even with Invisiline on the rise, braces are still a daily annoyance to candy lovers everywhere. You won’t be able to eat all candy with braces, but here are some you can!

Kit Kats

“Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar!” The iconic and super catchy theme song to the delicious, chocolate-covered wafer bar we all know and love. They can come in fun-size (about the size of your pointer finger) to king-size (about the size of your head!).

3 Musketeers (and all other soft chocolate bars)

Along with 3 Musketeers, soft candy bars include Hershey’s, Mars Bars, Nestle chocolate, Lindor (Lindt), Dove, Godiva, Milky Way, and any other chocolate without caramel or anything too crunchy.

Reese’s Pieces/ Peanut Butter Cups

“To all whom don’t have thou peanut allergy, thou are still allowed to eatith thou Reeses Peanut Butter products with thou braces ”-Me. You get the point.

M&M’S

Good news! You can still have M&M’S! Just not peanut (peanut butter is fine) or caramel ones. FUN FACT: M&M stands for Mercury and Mars, as a reference to the company that makes these delicious mini chocolates, Mars.

Soft Cookies

Soft and chewy, these treats are a delicious reminder of a cold, snowy night in winter, with milk and maybe a movie. But they can be enjoyed anytime with braces as long as they don’t have nuts and are SOFT (I’m looking at you, Tate’s and Chips Ahoy !)

Here are some more candies you can eat with braces:

  • Pixie Sticks
  • Any sort of crunchy snacks like Ritz Bitz or Cheez Itz
  •  Oreos

While these candies didn’t get much attention, they’re still worth mentioning.

Now, what to avoid…

It’s sad, I know, but there are still some candies you can’t eat with braces. So to spare you, dear reader, the pain of having to read about everything you can’t eat, this is just a list (but a long one, unfortunately).

  • Sour Patch Kids
  • Gummy Bears
  • Gum (duh)
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Tootsie POPS
  • Rolos
  • 100 Grand (R.I.P this was my favorite candy)
  • Beef Jerky
  • Milk Duds
  • Candy Corn
  • Jelly Beans
  • Dots
  • Sweedish Fish
  • Sugar Daddies/Sugar Babies
  • Nerds
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Butterscotch
  • Peppermints
  • Popcorn
  • Hard Chips
  • Any nut-based item
  • Any caramel-based item

And there you have it, folks! The dos and don’ts of eating candy with braces! Stay safe, don’t let your brackets fall off, and have a SpOoOoOoOoCkY Halloween!
