The samosa is a triangular Indian pastry stuffed with different fillings. This delicious snack originated, surprisingly, far away in the Middle East in the 10th century. At first, it was a court snack with dried fruits, nuts, and veggies inside. But then, in the 13th or 14th century, traders, travelers, and immigrants started to bring samosas to India. Over time, however, it had become a “crude peasant’s dish” and was now not as nice or fancy. But once it finally reached India, it got retransformed into a tasty snack. There were all new fillings, from potatoes and meat to spices and cheeses, and more recently, restaurants are even serving chocolate samosas! Samosa has become so popular over the years that there is a World Samosa Day, on the 5th of September. This flavorful pastry has transformed so much throughout the years, but despite its origins, it will always be an iconic food of India.
