Pride can be defined as, “a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired” (Oxford Languages). Within both Pelham middle school and high school, the importance of pride regarding the town and community is stressed. This is so students can feel a sense of belonging and joy towards their neighborhood and school. Pelham students and teachers are encouraged to wear clothing, such as shirts, sweatshirts, and pants with certain logos or colors to display pride. On occasion these clothing items are created by Pelham students. Some colors that represent Pelham and the schools within the town are blue, white and yellow. The well known pelican on Pelham jerseys, that also represents sports teams display proudness and dedication to the town of Pelham. As stated previously, many Pelham students and teachers support the idea of Pelham Pride. For example during the week some teachers wear a yellow sweatshirt that depict a pelican or mention something in regards to the town. When there are spirit weeks many students participate. For instance, on one day students may wear their team jersey for school, or will dress in blue, white and yellow. People can also display Pelham pride when discussing or caring for one another. For reference, Pelham schools stress the importance of inclusion, diversity, and kindness. If a Pelham student sees someone trip while walking in a park and drop their belongings, and the student rushes over to help the person, they are displaying Pelham pride. Another example of kindness towards others is if a student feels left out, another Pelham student walks over to that person and invites them to join a conversation. Examples listed above also show how Pelham pride can be displayed outside of a school environment, and around the town. Overall, the concept of pride towards one’s community and school is essential for a positive environment.
