The Community Project experience at Pelham Middle School is a significant part of the educational journey for Pelham’s 8th grade students. The project encourages students to engage with their surroundings and gives them a sense of responsibility and empathy. By working hard to meet their a goals that leave a positive impact on this planet, students learn the importance of giving back and understand the true differences they can make.
Additionally, the Community Project experience helps students develop essential life skills such as working with a team, problem solving, and communication. These skills begin developing early in the year, starting when 8th graders come together with their classmates to decide which real-world issue they want to take on. Overtime, each group will hit obstacles when working, but find away to push through in order to keep the project going. By the end of the year, students will hopefully see that both their community project evolved, as well as themselves. Their experience not only helped them be academically successful, but also prepared them for future challenges.
Finally, the Community Project experience at Pelham Middle School promotes a sense of belonging and strengthens our world. Students build relationships with local organizations and residents, creating support for Pelham beyond just the school’s walls. This connection to the community helps students appreciate the value of engaging and hopefully inspires them to continue contributing to society throughout their lives.
