Halloween is a very exciting American holiday that occurs every year on the last day of October on the 31st! On Halloween, kids all across America will dress up as their favourite super hero cartoon character and everything in between and go door-to-door trick-or-treating in hopes of getting candy and treats. Another tradition that people do on Halloween is carving pumpkins into jack o’lanterns and placing them outside as decoration. Common colors include black and orange as the color black represents death and the color orange represents harvesting.
So how did this tradition start? Well, it all started as an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. People would often light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts and other spirits, which is where the costume aspect of halloween comes into play. The Celts believed that on the night before their new year, the division between the living world and the dead became blurred. This meant that ghosts would be allowed to roam the Earth. Eventually, Pope Gregory III made November first a time to honor all saints. The night before would eventually become All Hallows Eve, which would eventually be shortened to Halloween. Today, on Halloween many people will attend parties and watch scary movies to celebrate Halloween.
But how do kids stay safe on Halloween? Well some tips include: if you have a mask or anything that could obscure your eyesight, make sure that you remove it before crossing the street. Also make sure that you can properly see out of it when walking around at night. It is also extremely important to stay in an area you are familiar with and stay with a trusted adult. Also make sure you NEVER GO INTO A STANGER’S HOME! Follow these simple tips and your Halloween experience will be amazing!
