What Can you do to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

On Friday March 17, 2023, St. Patrick’s day will be celebrated by the Irish and all cultures alike. St. Patrick’s Day is always celebrated on March 17 every year and celebrates customs commonly associated with the Irish.

Origins

St. Patrick’s Day was originally celebrated as a religious holiday in honor of St. Patrick, one of Ireland’s saints. Today, it is celebrated in America in a predominantly non-religious way. Did you know, St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated for over 300 years! It’s true, but how can you celebrate it? Well, here are just some ways to celebrate this holiday, from a person with mostly Irish heritage.

  • Dress up Green! Green is an Irish color, so dressing up in all green will be a fun way to celebrate while surely making a statement.
  • Create a leprechaun trap! While these may not work, they are surely a non-time-consuming activity to do with your families to do the eve of St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Make rainbow food! Rainbows are always said to have a pot of gold that leprechauns are searching for, so rainbow themed foods are a nod to Irish culture. It is a great way to celebrate especially if you like to cook.
  • Make Irish Soda Bread! Soda bread is an Irish food that you can easily cook at home. This sweet bread is a delicious way to bring Irish culture into your home on St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Watch a St. Patrick’s Day movie! While there may not be many out there, your tv probably has access to a decent St. Patrick’s Day movie. This is a lighter way to celebrate but fun that you can have with your family and friends.
  • Decorate your house in green! This may be extreme, but having fake pots of gold and clovers off of Amazon is a fun way to celebrate for those who go all-out for every holiday. This may not be the greatest for everyone because the holiday only lasts a day but it’s still fun to do no matter the final product.
