On March 8th, Student Government and 8th grade students will be holding an event where students have the opportunity to volunteer at the Spring Carnival, earning 2 hours of community service. There will be multiple festivities to attend including face painting, ring toss, pie the teacher and much more.
My community project partner and I were stuck pondering what we could do in our community to spread awareness of our topic, Cancer. Cancer is a disease caused when cells divide uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues. It is an unfortunately common disease faced by a dismaying amount of the population. My partner and I collectively agreed that this topic is the most prominent one we would like to bring awareness to, and the two of us both have relations to people who have or have had cancer.
We then saw the opportunity of the festival, and shaped our idea around the date. We knew we wanted to do something at a public event where people could be informed about our topic and bring attention to organizations that dedicate themselves to cancer treatment and research. We began to muse on ideas of how we could bring attention to ourselves at the Carnival, and it hit us.
Bracelets! Bracelets are a fundamental part of building friendships and defining who one is. It’s not only a fashionable accessory that can hold memories, but builds a bond between people. With this symbolism in mind, we decided to make bracelet colors dedicated to different types of cancers . The proceeds from our fundraiser would go directly to a reliable organization/charity, however it is not limited to the amount of money one wishes to give. Not only would this benefit organizations immensely, but it would also bring awareness to cancer patients and the undying need of those in battle.
