I watched as he was thrown onto the street with no faces of empathy of any kind. I watched as he pulled out his flip phone and tried calling people, judging by how little he talked. Nobody picked up. He started crying and sat down on the side of the road. I didn’t know what to do, but I felt bad for this person, so I started crying too and went back home, where I could hide from the inner despair I felt.
Today, I am glad I cried because it reminded me of the most important human emotion. Empathy matters more than anything, and empathy is exactly what we are leaving behind. As the Earth grows in unnatural ways, more problems erupt. Sure, our life expectancy is longer, but what about the quality of our life? At what point have we discovered everything, and then what will we do once we have? What is the next step? And why are we speeding up the process to the end, when the Earth is nothing but a barren wasteland? Many people imagine that as the end of Earth. I don’t. If humans are gone from the Earth, I imagine massive forests and rivers that stretch further than we can reach because there are no humans. We are our worst enemies. We have done great things, but at what cost, and at what point does it stop?
How can we do this if only somebody cared? And I know everyone does, but they aren’t showing it. Now is a time for reformation. We need to change the Earth, and I have a feeling that YOU know this. When we discovered fire, we thought it could help us, not become the tool that many use to burn down our shelter and family now. That is my point of view. Upon all these new technologies, we need to be careful. We need to focus on the future and what it will be like and what we want it to be like. The future lies in your hands, whether you throw away this paper without giving it a second thought or think deeply about what your future looks like. We need change, and I am not afraid to say that even if everything looks alright, it is not. And I know that I am not afraid to say that we can fix this. We have the power to fix this.
